Preparing to Film

Hey bloggers, today I want to discuss with you about different aspects of our movie opener releasing this year. There is much work going on behind the scenes that contributes to our movie making process, allowing for this film to achieve what it is trying to accomplish. Anyways, let’s get into it.

Actors:

Actors are the faces and prime material you see whenever you watch a movie, thus, need to act exactly as they are intended to be. Our star, Randy Smith Jr., takes on the role of our protagonist, who will need to put on the best show he can. Other actors such as myself and Davin will be featured as side characters to create the scenario we are creating for our film. The main challenge with this part of the job is trying to get everyone to show up on the day of shooting, as some may not be able to come. Our movie will feature numerous rolls and will require our actors to be patient with production, as well as be consistent with their acting to perform well. We are still currently auditioning people at school, so stay tuned for our list of cast.

Costumes:

This may be the easiest part of filming, since our necessary clothing consists of blue and red shirts, as well as a referee outfit. It will not be hard at all to have our crew show up in their costumes. We do want to add on blonde wigs for the red team, to add nonsensical comedic effect to the film, but they will be used if we can find ones that fit our budget.

Props:

Props such as a football, flag football belts, and a whistle will be utilized to create the sports scenario we envisioned. The only issue we can run into would be our budgeting, which we must not attempt to go over the limit.

Locations and Dates:

We are planning our film to be shot during the following weekend of February 4th and 5th, as well as potentially February 11th and 12th. The location of filming will be at Miramar Regional Park, which has enough land to set up a football game. The main challenge the date and time would create is having our actors be present on time, without any need to not show up. Additionally, we hope we do not receive any interruption or negative circumstances that would stop production for the day, such as injury or if we cannot find a proper area of the park to film at.

Scripts and Film Equipment:

Our script is in the works, but may be subject to change during production as we see fit. We want to hear feedback from our actors and advisors, who may provide good ideas for what the character should say during the shot. Next, film equipment will simply be a phone and selfie stick, which is simple, but our budget cannot handle expensive products. The biggest challenges with using a phone includes having to make sure the clips are not shaky, audio from the wind does not impact the voices of the actors, visual quality does not take a hit, clips may be deleted accidentally, and making sure the device does not run out of charge.

Closing Thoughts:

These challenges work to hurt our production and how long filming will take, but we are certain we can power through the technical issues. We hope it all goes smoothly and that our final product will appear presentable to the public. That’s all for me this week, thanks for tuning in!

Offside's Storyboard

Hey bloggers, today I want to go over our plans for our film, Offsides, a dramatic sports-comedy about a football player’s dream to overcome constant failure and a being looked down upon by all of his peers. Below is a rough draft of our story board, but do understand this is not the final version as we do want to continue adding shots and angles that would compliment some of the ones present in the blog. This is to serve the overall plot and comedic effects we wish to implement into our film opener, so please do enjoy. Thank you.

Shot 1: Here we have a cowboy shot of our main protagonist staring into a mirror inside of a public restroom, with lower-key lighting being used with artificial lighting shining right above him to emphasize his importance.

Shot 2: Wide shot of blue coach prepping his players for the football game, natural lighting being utilized.

Shot 3:  Medium shot with brighter camera filter being used for the dream sequence, the red team quarterback presents for the first time, appearing nervous as he witnesses the protagonist approaching the field.

Shot 4: Over the shoulder shot from receiver’s side to protagonist, brighter camera filter still being used. Protagonist shouts, “It is about to go down!”

Shot 5: Truck camera movement used with wide shot and brighter camera filter. Protagonist picks off the pass.
Shot 6: Extreme wide shot of protagonist running for the end-zone, with red team players chasing far behind him. Brighter camera filter.

Shot 7: Wide shot of the blue team hoisting protagonist up, celebrating their victory. Ripple effect transition commences after about 5 seconds.

Shot 8: Natural lighting, panning backwards from close up of protagonist imagining the previous scene’s sequence. Coach tell him to wake up.

Shot 9: Wide shot with gloomier lighting implemented to emphasize sudden change in plot and mood of the scene. Coach disciplines protagonist for not being on the field, mentions wanting to replace him with the water boy.

Shot 10: Wide shot with the gloomy lighting, showing waterboy falling onto the tray of water.

Shot 11: Medium shot with gloomy lighting, red team quarterback fully confident about his circumstances as protagonist enters field.

Shot 12: Wide shot with gloomy lighting, protagonist is put up against a red team’s weak backup receiver, degrading the protagonist.

Shot 13: Gloomy lighting, tracking movement consisting of protagonist being pushed by backup receiver, then presenting the receiver running a play.

Shot 14: Wide shot with gloomy lighting, backup receiver catches the ball and enters endzone, whilst the rest of the red team enters the shot to celebrate.

Shot 15: POV shot from protagonist’s perspective with gloomy lighting, where protagonist lays hurt on the ground observing the red team teasing him.

Shot 16: Overhead shot over the previous shot, where the red team begins to disperse away from the protagonist’s body laying on the ground. The camera begins to pan away from the scene to present a wider shot, revealing the title of the movie at the protagonist’s side.

Mood Board for Final Project

Good evening bloggers, today I want to provide a mood-board for our upcoming final project: "Offsides," a sports comedy about a teen who struggles to find the balance between what he believes he could be and the reality of his football career, that being in the trash. If you are interested in further news and details of the soon to be released opening scene, please like and follow this blog. Anyways, let's get into it!

My mood board utilizes the emotions of both excitement and sadness through the lighting and actions that are featured in each picture. Starting off, the bathroom image is utilized to convey the beginning of the film opener, including angles of the protagonist getting ready to play on the field, providing facial expressions of anxiety, which the lighting of the scene will reflect on his face. There are two images of a football field that includes one in high-key lighting, while the other is lower-key. The brighter image will be used for the dream sequence of the scene, whilst the darker one is to show what really transpired in the plot, where the protagonist gets trampled by the opponents.

Additionally, the color themes implemented into my mood board consist of blue, red, and green. Blue and red are the colors of the football teams that will appear in our opening, where the protagonist is a part of the blue team, while red is the opposing side. Green’s main use is in the setting, which is on a field full of grass. Lastly, the energy of the mood-board can be traced through the actions of the football players in the images, where some are making plays, passing the ball, tackling, or even celebrating their touchdown. In addition to this, the loss of the game can be found in the players sulking on the ground of the field. A very important aspect to the positivity of the dream sequence can be found in the way the powderpuff cheerleaders add excitement towards the touchdown that the protagonist scores. All in all, this mood-board properly conveys the emotions and type of genre this film is going for, a sports comedy.

Final Project: "Offsides"

                                                                   Offsides (Coming 2023)

Our final project is upon us, a short opening to a movie using all the techniques that we have learned in the course so far. There are both exciting features, as well as worrisome troubles that have been created  through our thinking over the course of the project. We have yet to begin filming the video, but the issues have been able to leak out of the pipes.

Background Info.

Our film opener will revolve around the comedic-sports genre about a football player’s dream to become greater than he is. Motivation for our protagonist is the reason for this scene we are creating, where he dreams about successfully running a play and making a much achieved touchdown, but once he wakes up he completely and utterly ruins the entire team’s chance at winning the game. It establishes what type of movie and mood that the film is trying to convey, we believe this would be a fantastic idea to execute, even with its cliche nature.

Additionally, my partner and I are excited to begin filming this scene. Our creativity and imagination for this project are pouring out of us to ensure we can achieve excellence in the video. I feel especially excited about working with Davin, as he and I can cooperate effectively and critique each other's ideas if necessary. We both understand what we want to create and gain from this project, making the process of co-directing much easier.

Issues

Although I see the positives of making such a film opening, I do have to acknowledge our worries for the video. One being the inconveniences that arise from having to film, including finding a date and time for our actors to show up on the scene, what to wear, weather, proper natural lighting, and whether the actual plot and actions would look genuine and easy to follow on camera. Getting multiple actors to show up on a single day proves difficult, especially because they may be busy with other activities at the time. We also have the issue that the idea of the film may just not work as well as we wanted it to. There are simpler things to film, such as a serial killer invading a home or someone washing dishes, which is not what we want to necessarily do. We dream big, we film big. All we can hope for is that it all turns out alright post-production.

Conclusion

Davin and I hope the project turns out to be successful, especially because of how well we can work with one another. There are issues to consider before filming that need to be assured will not happen, but others may just happen without our noticing. However, we are both ready to work through the grime, and create a film opening that will provide insight into our creative thinking.
