Opening Credits

Hey bloggers! I have recently been looking into many shows to explore the opening credits and the purpose behind them to help introduce an episode of the series. They vary in their lengths, atmospheres, colors, music, and even their complexity. Today, I will be showcasing some of the ones I found to be particularly interesting, enjoy!

     Game of Thrones Opening

I think most of you saw this coming, the first opening credit I would like to discuss is from Game of Thrones. Though I have yet to dive into this series, I need to give it congrats on how spectacular everything in the scene helps develop a drive for the world of GoT. I am a sucker for series, movies, and games that can provide us big worlds full of life. First off, the cello is magnificent, giving us a soft feeling and adding to the wonder on the scenery that is playing in front of our eyes. The opening explores different parts of Westeros showing cogs and machinery building up toy buildings to show evolution of the land and its populations of people. I do wish to watch this show eventually, as I can understand there is context behind different parts of the opening that I may have missed, which I will most certainly get to.

    Stranger Things Opening

I want to go ahead and state how remarkable this title screen is to the series. The show begins with this opening zooming out to reveal a red, neon-lit title with ominous retro music playing in the background. It encapsulates the true nature of the Stranger Things world, taking place in the 80s fitting to the music genre, as well as the neon lights. However, the inclusion of red and black tells a tale of the dark history that we will uncover upon watching this show, it is a warning to the watcher.

    Loki Opening

I never expected this show to have imprinted onto me, nor believed it would hold to the Marvel standards, yet here it is. Much more interestingly, the into reveals much about the true nature of this show is with just its title, similar to Stranger Things. Loki's intro involves music that will set up a gloomy atmosphere, emphasized by the bleak colors of white illuminated by the title. The visuals appear grainy and occasionally look to have cracks on the screen to add to that gloominess, as well as build uncertainty for the show. Furthermore, a detail that people may have missed is the changing of fonts in each letter of the title on each beat of the music. This contributes to the realization of having multiple Loki's from different timelines being present in the show, but it may also reveal our Loki's uncertainty for who he is and what purpose he has in life. It is a slow paced show that will not get the attention outside of MCU fans, but if you are one I highly recommend it.

    Adventure Time Opening

Adventure Time has been my favorite cartoon show since I started watching it back in 2010. I mentioned previously my lust for open worlds with vast cast of characters to make the world feel lively, which Adventure Time is able to succeed in. The opening credit begins with a continuous shot of part of the Land of Ooo, the fictional world the show takes place in, arriving into the humble house of Finn and Jake. These two are introduced to the audience with a wholesome display of adventure and playfulness as  soft ukulele music plays to accompany the two. It presents joy into the audience watching at home. The series is full of cherish able moments that any kid will surely enjoy, although that may not be the same for the adults watching.

    Breaking Bad Opening

For the last opening I want to discuss is from Breaking Bad, a show that has made its way into my heart over the past year, such a once in a lifetime show. Now, the into consists of green , yellow, and white colors to resemble the griminess that this show will present to the audience. The sound choice is perfect, with bongos and a yet another instrument I had to learn off the internet, the dobro. They provide a sound to unsettle the viewer, not in a horrific way, but neither in a comfortable way. I tend to imagine myself on the porch of a rundown house in the middle of the desert, which is entirely relevant to Breaking Bad's story. The inclusion of the periodic table is fitting for the context of the show, which is about a chemistry teacher's evolution into a full-fledged drug lord, using his knowledge of the subject to cook crystal meth. A small detail that is used in the intro is from the smoke that arises during the last half of the opening, which rots the words of the title similar to how drugs and cigarettes' would rot your lungs. All these factors create a masterpiece of an opening, simple yet effective.
